Platform Updates Hitting Your eCommerce Store (And How to Get Ahead of Them)

Platform Updates Hitting Your eCommerce Store (And How to Get Ahead of Them)

While you're heads down on inventory, campaigns, and customer service, your eCommerce platform is probably making background changes that affect your checkout and shipping setup. A feature gets deprecated. An API rule shifts how your integrations behave. A pricing update adds a fee you didn't see coming. None of it waits for you to have a free afternoon.

Platforms (like Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, and Adobe Commerce, to name a few) are constantly building new features, redesigning layouts, and updating their tech, all aimed at one thing: helping you sell more product, faster.

That's a good thing…mostly.

The catch is the pace. Updates roll out fast, sometimes overnight, and merchants don't always get a heads-up when a platform is A/B testing a new feature or checkout flow. That means your checkout and shipping setup needs a strong enough foundation to hold up no matter what gets thrown at it.

If you can't keep up, we can. If a platform update has you confused, or you suspect something shifted without you realizing it, the ShipperHQ team is happy to help you sort it out.

Here’s a rundown of the most recent eCommerce platform changes that we think are worth your attention right now, and what to do about each one.

Big Changes Coming for Shopify's Carrier Service API

Coming: October, 1 2026

Starting with Admin API version 2026-10, creating a carrier service in Shopify no longer automatically adds rates to the general shipping profile. That used to happen by default. Now it requires explicit configuration after the carrier service is created, or new rates simply won't show up at checkout.

What was updated: New carrier services created via the Admin API need manual configuration to appear in the General shipping profile.
Who it hits: Developers, app partners, and any merchant using an app that provides calculated shipping rates through the carrier service API.
Your move: If you're managing your carriers directly through Shopify's native tools, you'll need to reconfigure them yourself to prevent rates from disappearing at checkout. If you're on ShipperHQ, this is already handled. Our integration automatically stays current with Shopify's Admin API versions.

Shopify Scripts Is Shutting Off for Good

Effective: June 30, 2026

Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. If your store still uses Scripts to apply discounts, control which shipping methods show at checkout, or run any other checkout logic, that logic no longer works.

What was updated: Shopify Scripts is deprecated and replaced by Shopify Functions.
Who it hits: Any Shopify merchant using Scripts for discount logic, shipping method visibility, or custom checkout rules.
Your move: If shipping method visibility or custom shipping rules were part of what your Scripts handled, ShipperHQ’s Shipping Rules can move that logic into a system built to keep working through platform changes like this one.

Shopify Checkout Got a Conversion-Focused Redesign

Effective: June 17, 2026

Shopify's Spring '26 Edition shipped a checkout redesign built around conversion: easier-to-scan delivery options, a more prominent pay button, and less scrolling on mobile. Shopify also rolled out managed payment methods, which reorder payment options in real time based on what's most likely to convert for that specific shopper.

What was updated: Checkout redesign for shipping and delivery clarity and mobile usability, plus managed payment methods that dynamically reorder payment options.
Who it hits: Every Shopify merchant, though the impact is most visible for stores with multiple shipping methods or delivery options competing for attention at checkout.
Your move: This is a good moment to revisit how your shipping options actually display. You can control how your shipping options are presented in the cart with Enhanced Checkout, so you and your customers can create a more personalized shipping experience.

BigCommerce Added a New Fee for Non-Approved Payment Providers

Effective: June 1, 2026

BigCommerce introduced an Open Payment Provider Fee, a charge of up to 2% on GMV processed through any payment gateway not on its approved Embedded Payment Provider list. This came alongside a full plan rename and lower GMV thresholds that trigger an automatic plan upgrade.

What was updated: A new fee applies to orders processed through non-approved payment gateways, layered on top of renamed plans and tighter GMV thresholds.
Who it hits: Any BigCommerce merchant using a third-party payment gateway not on the approved list, particularly stores that chose BigCommerce specifically because it didn't tax outside gateways the way other platforms do.
Your move: Check which payment providers are processing your orders today, and how much of your GMV runs through gateways outside BigCommerce's approved list. This is also a good moment to have a broader checkout conversation. If a pricing change is already prompting a review, it’s worth the effort to examine how shipping and checkout interact.

Magento and Adobe Commerce Made Checkout Pay Better

Effective: May 12, 2026

Magento 2.4.9 hit general availability in May, bringing real improvements to how customers pay, not just under-the-hood fixes. Apple Pay now works on Chrome and Firefox, not just Safari. Google Pay and Apple Pay Express Checkout both support promo codes for the first time. Saved cards auto-update when they expire or get reissued, cutting down on failed renewals for repeat customers. New local payment methods also landed for Germany and Brazil.

What was updated: Expanded payment method support and express checkout improvements across Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce.
Who it hits: Any Magento or Adobe Commerce merchant using Braintree, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, especially those selling internationally.
Your move: More payment options at checkout is a genuine conversion lever, but only if shipping keeps pace. A customer who can now pay with Apple Pay on Firefox still bounces if your shipping options are confusing or inaccurate, so tools like Enhanced Checkout or Product Page Calculator work to help payment and shipping improvements move together instead of one outpacing the other.
